Our Story
Life Concern (LICO) was established in 2008 as a registered non‑profit organisation, rooted in Rumphi District, Northern Malawi, with a deep commitment to empowering rural, marginalised, and vulnerable communities to live with dignity and resilience. Responding to persistent social and development challenges, we have grown from a small community‑based organisation into a results‑driven institution focused on integrated, sustainable development.

Rumphi and its neighbouring districts remain predominantly rural, with high levels of poverty, youth unemployment, and vulnerability to climate shocks. Access to high‑quality health services, education, economic opportunities, and essential social support remains limited for many households, particularly women, youth, and persons with disabilities. These realities fuel cycles of inequality and constrain individuals’ ability to thrive. LICO exists to change that.

At the core of LICO’s work is our belief that every person deserves equal opportunity, good health, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to their community. This belief is reflected in our vision:
“Healthy communities, living dignified lives, in a sustainable environment.”

To bring this vision to life, we deliver programmes across multiple, inter‑linked thematic areas, including Health, Education, Climate Resilience, Food Security, Economic Empowerment, Human Rights, and Governance, guided by core values of integrity, transparency, unity of purpose, accountability, sustainability, and trustworthiness.

A Strategic Evolution: Pathways to Resilience and Inclusive Development
As we move forward under our Strategic Plan 2026–2030, LICO is evolving from responding to urgent needs toward building resilient systems and expanding opportunities that address the root causes of exclusion and inequality. This plan was developed through broad community and stakeholder consultations and aligns with Malawi’s long‑term development goals, including Malawi Vision 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Our strategy is anchored around eight key result areas that reflect emerging community priorities and LICO’s growing institutional capacity:
-
Health Service Delivery – enhancing access to quality, integrated health services, including SRHR, HIV/AIDS and TB care.
-
Education and Digital Literacy – strengthening learning environments and bridging the digital divide.
-
Gender Equality, Women’s Empowerment & Child Protection – promoting safety, equity, and rights for women and children.
-
Climate Resilience & Sustainable Livelihoods – promoting adaptation, environmental stewardship, and food security.
-
Economic Empowerment – increasing opportunities for income, entrepreneurship, and technical skills.
-
Institutional Capacity Strengthening – building stronger systems for sustainable impact.
-
Social Enterprise Development – advancing revenue‑generating initiatives to support long‑term sustainability.
-
Governance & Advocacy – strengthening civic engagement, accountability, and responsive leadership.
This strategic direction marks a shift toward multi‑sectoral, integrated solutions that improve long‑term well‑being, strengthen community systems, and expand opportunities for the most vulnerable. For example, beyond essential service delivery, LICO is enhancing digital literacy, climate adaptation programming, and enterprise development to support livelihoods in a changing economy and environment.

Partnerships and Shared Impact
LICO’s success is made possible through strategic collaborations with government entities, civil society partners, development agencies, and private sector actors. Together, we co‑design and implement solutions that are community‑led, evidence‑informed, and sustainable.

Looking Ahead
As we implement our strategic plan, LICO remains committed to strengthening systems, amplifying community voices, and unlocking opportunities for vulnerable people to realise their full potential. Through innovation, resilience-building, and grounded partnerships, we are advancing toward healthier, more equitable, and prosperous communities across Northern Malawi and beyond.
