Improving Learning Environments and Access to Safe Water in Rumphi District

Across many rural communities in Rumphi District, Malawi, children continue to face barriers that affect their ability to learn and thrive. One of the persistent challenges in primary schools is the shortage of classroom desks, forcing learners to sit on floors, overcrowd available furniture, or learn in uncomfortable conditions. Such environments can negatively affect concentration, participation, and overall learning outcomes.

Access to safe and reliable water remains another challenge for many schools and surrounding communities. Inadequate water supply affects hygiene, sanitation, and the overall wellbeing of learners. It can also contribute to absenteeism, particularly among girls, while limiting schools' ability to maintain healthy learning environments. These challenges undermine efforts to provide quality education and create opportunities for children to reach their full potential.

As part of its commitment to improving access to quality education and essential services, Life Concern has implemented a series of interventions in Rumphi District. Established in 2008, LICO works to address community development challenges through integrated programs in education, health, livelihoods, human rights, and climate resilience. The organisation's education initiatives focus on creating safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments for children and young people.

Recently, LICO distributed a total of 205 classroom desks to four primary schools: Mbulunji, Mayembe, Chozoli, and Mafumu. The support included both newly manufactured and repaired desks, helping address critical shortages of classroom furniture in the beneficiary schools. By increasing the availability of desks, the intervention aims to improve classroom conditions and provide learners with a more comfortable and dignified learning experience.

In addition, LICO is constructing a solar-powered water supply system at Lusimbo Primary School. The initiative builds on the organisation's broader efforts to improve access to clean water and strengthen education infrastructure across Rumphi District. Previous LICO-supported water projects have demonstrated how reliable water systems can transform learning environments, improve hygiene, and benefit both schools and surrounding communities.

The impact of these interventions is expected to be far-reaching. Improved access to desks will enable more learners to participate effectively in lessons, reduce classroom congestion, and create conditions that support better educational outcomes. Meanwhile, the solar-powered water system at Lusimbo Primary School will help ensure access to safe water for learners, teachers, and nearby households, promoting improved health, sanitation, and school attendance.

At Life Concern, we believe that every child deserves a safe, supportive, and well-equipped environment in which to learn. By investing in education infrastructure and access to essential services, we are helping build stronger schools, healthier communities, and brighter futures for children in Rumphi District. Through continued collaboration with partners and communities, LICO remains committed to transforming lives and advancing sustainable development across Northern Malawi.
