Education goes beyond classroom lessons. It also includes activities that support the physical, social and emotional development of students. Sports play a crucial role in this process by promoting teamwork, discipline, confidence and inclusion among learners. However, many primary schools face challenges in integrating sports into education due to limited resources. This situation particularly affects girls, who often have fewer opportunities to participate in sports compared to boys. Recognizing this challenge, Life Concern (LICO) identified the lack of sports equipment in some schools as a barrier preventing students from fully enjoying both education and play.
At Mzokoto and Lusimbo Primary Schools, students had limited chances to combine learning with sports because the schools did not have adequate sports equipment. Without footballs, netballs and sports uniforms, it was difficult for teachers to organize sports activities or encourage students especially girls to actively participate. This lack of equipment meant that many students were missing out on the benefits of sports, which are an important part of a balanced education.

Life Concern stepped in with a practical intervention. The organization has donated sports equipment to both schools to help improve students’ participation in sports. During the donation, girls’ teams in each school were provided with one full jersey kit and one netball, while boys teams received one football each. The donation aimed to ensure that both girls and boys would have the opportunity to engage in sports activities while continuing with their academic studies.
The event was warmly received by both students and teachers in these schools. They expressed satisfaction and happiness upon receiving the sports equipment, noting that the donation would make it easier for them to participate in organized sports activities. Teachers appreciated the support, explaining that the equipment would help them integrate sports into the school routine, making learning more engaging and balanced for students. The donation is expected to benefit 976 students (513 boys and 463 girls) in total from these two schools.

Beyond promoting sports in schools, Life Concern also works with several schools and learners to strengthen access to quality education. The organization supports students through the provision of bursaries, learning materials, classroom desks, construction and renovation of school infrastructure, and improved access to safe water. Through these efforts, Life Concern aims to create a supportive learning environment that enables students to succeed both academically and personally.
Life Concern believes that the availability of sports equipment will significantly improve students’ overall school experience. By integrating sports with education, students can develop better concentration, teamwork skills, and physical health, all of which contribute positively to academic performance. The organization hopes that the donation will encourage students especially girls to actively participate in sports and enjoy their right to play while pursuing their education.
This initiative also marks an important milestone for Life Concern. The donations to Mzokoto and Lusimbo Primary Schools represent the 78th and 79th sports equipment donations made by the organization to primary and secondary schools. Through such efforts, Life Concern continues to promote inclusive education by ensuring that students have the resources they need to balance learning and play.
By supporting schools with sports equipment, Life Concern is helping in create an environment where education and sports work together to shape well-rounded, confident and motivated students.
