Across many rural communities in Northern Malawi, access to quality education continues to be constrained by inadequate school infrastructure and overcrowded classrooms. In Rumphi District, learners at Mayembe Primary School have for years faced learning challenges due to limited classroom space, resulting in congestion, reduced contact time with teachers, and an unconducive learning environment, particularly for girls.

In response to these challenges, LICO, with generous support from the Epsilon Foundation, has completed the construction of a new school block at Mayembe Primary School in Rumphi district. The new facility represents an important investment in improving access to safe, dignified, and child-friendly learning spaces for learners in the area.

The additional classrooms are easing congestion and creating a more structured learning environment that supports effective teaching and improved learner concentration. For girls, access to adequate classroom space is especially critical. Overcrowding and poor learning conditions are known contributors to absenteeism, dropout, early marriage, and early pregnancy. By providing a safer and more supportive learning environment, the new school block strengthens girls’ retention in school and their chances of completing their education.

LICO’s education programming goes beyond infrastructure development. The organisation implements integrated education interventions that combine school construction and rehabilitation with community engagement, child protection, gender equality promotion, and support for vulnerable learners. This approach ensures that physical infrastructure improvements translate into meaningful and lasting educational outcomes for children.

The completion of the Mayembe school block has been warmly welcomed by school authorities and the wider community, who recognise its long-term value for current and future generations of learners. Community involvement throughout the project has reinforced local ownership and responsibility for safeguarding and maintaining the facility.

LICO extends sincere appreciation to the Epsilon Foundation for its continued partnership and commitment to improving education outcomes for vulnerable children in Malawi. The support has not only enhanced the learning environment at Mayembe Primary School but has also renewed hope among learners, parents, and teachers.

While this achievement marks meaningful progress, many schools across Northern Malawi continue to face similar infrastructure challenges. LICO remains committed to expanding access to quality education and safe learning spaces for children, especially girls, but sustained impact requires strong partnerships and continued investment.
