Empowering Malawi’s Youth for a Sustainable Future

Malawi's youth, who make up over 60% of the population, face enormous challenges in their pursuit of economic independence and meaningful livelihoods. Unemployment and underemployment among young people remain high, largely due to a mismatch between education and market demands, limited job opportunities, a predominantly under-skilled labour force, and widespread digital illiteracy. As a result, many young Malawians struggle with poverty, dependency, and frustration, factors that not only hinder personal growth but also slow down national development.

These challenges are not only a threat to the wellbeing of Malawi’s youth, but they are also a significant stumbling block to the country’s national development. When young people are not economically empowered, the nation loses out on their potential contributions to innovation, productivity, and growth. Persistent youth unemployment fuels poverty, dependency, and in some cases, engagement in risky behaviours and migration in search of opportunities.

In response to this pressing need, LICO is actively implementing youth empowerment initiatives designed to bridge the skills gap and unlock young people's potential. One of LICO’s key strategies is providing vocational start-up toolkits to graduates from technical colleges. These tools empower beneficiaries to start their own small businesses in areas such as carpentry, welding, tailoring, and electrical installation, promoting self-employment and economic resilience.

Recognising the growing importance of technology in today’s economy, LICO is also investing in digital skills training for youth. These trainings equip young people with essential 21st-century skills including computer literacy, digital communication and entrepreneurship. By aligning its programs with market needs, LICO helps young people become competitive in both formal and informal job markets.
Beyond skills, LICO fosters an environment of innovation and self-confidence. Through mentorship, business development support, and access to relevant networks, the organisation nurtures young leaders who can contribute meaningfully to their communities and the broader economy.

These interventions are not just about creating jobs, they are about restoring hope, enhancing livelihoods, and driving inclusive development. By empowering youth with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive, LICO is helping to build a future where Malawi’s young population is no longer seen as a burden, but as the engine of sustainable growth and transformation.
