Strengthening Governance for Sustainable Impact

Strong governance is a cornerstone of effective and accountable civil society organisations. When governance systems are weak or poorly understood, organisations often face challenges such as unclear leadership oversight, weak accountability mechanisms, inconsistent decision-making processes, and limited transparency. Over time, these gaps can erode the confidence of partners, donors, and the communities organisations aim to serve. Without a well-informed and functional governing board, even well-designed programmes can struggle to achieve their intended outcomes or maintain long-term sustainability.
Recognising the critical role that governance plays in organisational effectiveness, Life Concern (LICO) organised a Board Members Orientation and Governance Strengthening Workshop at K-View Hotel. The workshop brought together members of the organisation’s Board of Trustees and Senior Management with the goal of strengthening institutional governance and enhancing the board’s oversight role in guiding the organisation’s strategic direction.

The workshop created a dedicated platform for dialogue and reflection on governance practices within the organisation. Participants reviewed LICO’s governance structure, explored internationally recognised principles of nonprofit governance, and reflected on the responsibilities of board members in providing strategic leadership, accountability, and policy guidance. The engagement also allowed both the Board and management to strengthen their shared understanding of roles and responsibilities, which is essential for effective collaboration and institutional stability.
Through interactive discussions and collaborative learning sessions, the workshop highlighted several key governance considerations necessary for a strong and effective board. Participants examined the importance of clearly defined governance structures that support efficient decision-making and accountability. Discussions also emphasised the role of functional board committees in strengthening oversight and ensuring that critical areas of organisational management receive adequate attention and guidance.
In addition, participants reflected on the importance of having clear governance policies that guide board operations and institutional decision-making. The workshop highlighted the need for transparent and structured board recruitment processes to ensure that future board members are selected based on relevant expertise and commitment to the organisation’s mission. Participants also discussed the importance of defined terms of service for board members, which helps maintain continuity while allowing for renewal of ideas and leadership within the organisation. Proper documentation of board meetings and decisions was also emphasised as a critical element for maintaining institutional memory, transparency, and accountability.

By examining these governance areas, the Board and management were able to identify opportunities to further strengthen institutional systems that support effective leadership and organisational oversight. The discussions encouraged collective ownership of governance improvements and reinforced the board’s strategic role in guiding the organisation’s long-term growth and sustainability.
As a result of this initiative, LICO has reinforced its commitment to institutional accountability, transparency, and continuous organisational improvement. Strengthening governance systems enables the organisation to provide effective strategic leadership, safeguard resources, and ensure that programmes are implemented responsibly and efficiently for the benefit of the communities it serves.

This activity was implemented under the Resilient Organisational Systems for Sustainable Growth Project supported by Tilitonse Foundation through the Shift the Power – Civil Society Strengthening Fund.
For LICO, strengthening governance is not a one-time activity but an ongoing institutional priority. By continuously investing in strong governance systems and leadership capacity, the organisation is building a solid foundation for sustainable growth, responsible management, and impactful community development.
