LICO is making significant strides in promoting workplace safety and accountability through its ongoing awareness sessions with CHICO Construction Company workers. The sessions, held along the EU-funded M1 Road Rehabilitation Project from Kacheche to Chiweta in Rumphi District, focus on the prevention of HIV and AIDS, Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA), and Child Protection.
With over 50% of the targeted 700 workers already trained, LICO is on track to reach all CHICO personnel across different construction sites. The initiative, sub-granted by CHICO Construction Company, is part of a broader effort supported by the European Investment Bank to ensure that infrastructure development goes hand in hand with community well-being and safety.
Many CHICO workers operate far from their homes, which increases vulnerability to risky behaviours and SEA-related risks. LICO’s sessions provide a critical platform to educate workers on their responsibilities, rights, and the importance of upholding dignity in the workplace. The trainings have already resulted in improved understanding and proactive engagement from participants, with several workers expressing their appreciation for the eye-opening experience.
The intervention is not only enhancing personal awareness but is also fostering a culture of respect and accountability across CHICO sites. LICO remains committed to completing the training for all targeted workers and contributing to a safer, more informed, and empowered workforce along the M1 corridor.
